This paper discusses the approximation errors of two methods, Froude and Faltinsen methods, used for identifying the linear and quadratic damping. Through revisiting the detailed derivation of these two methods, the inherent assumptions are first argued in the present paper and the systematic errors in these two methods are quantified. A direct integral method is also proposed, and the identification results are discussed based on both numerical and experimental data. The results indicate that Froude method has a better prediction of linear and nonlinear damping coefficients than Faltinsen method. Froude and Faltinsen methods can give a relatively accurate prediction for low-damping problems. For high-damping problems, Froude and Faltinsen methods may give larger than 5% systematic errors in the determined linear and quadratic damping coefficients, while the direct integral method shows a high identification accuracy. |
